Handicap shower seats might not be the first things you think of when you contemplate the bathroom, but if you are a person with disabilities, then their priority shoots up in the grand scheme of things. Let’s look at how they help and what is so special about them.

The first thing you will notice about any handicap bathroom layout is that there is plenty of space, or at least there should be. That’s because a wheelchair users needs to get in and out without constantly bumping into things or indeed having access blocked by an ill-designed furniture layout. Handicap bathrooms need that wide space for access by wheelchairs and that includes the shower.

Handicap showers are, by necessity extra large enclosures to allow wheelchair access for those that need it and to be able to easily transfer from a wheelchair to a shower seat if that is possible.

Handicap shower seats are specially designed to be stronger and more robust than regular shower seats. They need to be as users may not find it so easy to transfer from a wheelchair and will often land with a bump. If the user is heavy, and don’t forget many people with disabilities do tend to become overweight through the inability to exercise as able bodies people can, then when they land on the shower seat an ill-designed one could fall to pieces. That’s the last thing a person with disabilities wants to happen, so a good quality handicap shower seat is strong and able to stand up to the extra pressure.

Added to that, they are of course generally made from stainless steel to prevent corrosion and will have non slip feet to prevent then sliding around when you really don’t want them to!

So now you have a better insight into a little thought of item of bathroom accessories and what it is for.
